Home Filters Solar Filters & Glasses Lunt Herschel Wedge 1.25 Inch
The Lunt 1.25" White Light Solar Herschel-Wedge is designed for use with refracting telescopes up to 150mm aperture, with 1.25" focusers. This provides superior White Light views and images of the Solar surface, granulation and Sunspots. Herschel Wedges provide superior resolution and better contrast than full aperture white light filters. The Lunt LS1.25HW 31.7mm 1.25" Herschel-wedge comes complete system with installed ND3.0 Neutral Density filter.Delivery time is around 7-10 days direct from our supplier
Herschel Wedges or as they are sometimes known Solar Wedges are used to observe the sun with refractor telescopes in white light. More than 95% of the Sun's light will be suppressed by the Herschel Wedge and the remaining 5% is further dimmed by a pre-installed Neutral Density 3.0 filter. An additional radial polarizing filter (supplied separately) can be installed in an eyepiece to reduce the light yet further to a desired level. A Herschel Wedge polarises light, so in order to tune the brightness using a polarising filter, you simply twist an eyepiece with a radal polarising filter installed. As the eyepiece twists in the Herschel wedge's eyepiece holder, polarisation either increases or decreases - and you can set this to your own personal needs. We recommend the Bresser Polarising Filter 1.25" for this purpose ref 4946464The difference between Herschel Wedges and normal front mounted filters is, that the filtering takes place just before the eyepiece or camera. This will provide a better contrast and sharpness of the solar image.Advantages of the Herschel Wedge:Especially high-quality optical surfaces for very good contrast Fully closed body with integrated heat trap No stray light escaping - so it is very safe ND3.0 filter comes pre-installedThis Herschel Wedge is only for use with refractor telescopes up to 150mm aperture. Because the full energy and heat of the sun inside the telescope OTA, we advise to only use refractor with a Herschel Wedge. The refractors must also not have corrector lenses at the rear of the OTA. Optical elements like corrector lenses or secondary mirrors of reflector telescopes become very hot by the concentrated solar energy and could be damaged - thus SCTs and Maksutovs are classed as unsuitable.
Fantastic piece of equipment, perfect for white light solar observing! Highly recommended (20/02/2024) -
Lunt Herschel Wedge 1.25 Inch The view through this is lovely in both a 70mm and 100mm refractor. Solidly made and feels safer than film. The first one I ordered never arrived due to a courier problem but Harrison's quickly sorted this out. Excellent company to deal with, Thank You (09/10/2022) Ennio - Dorset
Excellent Solar Viewing Wedge Really pleased with the wedge. Really good high contrast white light views of the Sun. Good seeing conditions allow for higher magnification for greater sunspot detail. Used in conjuction with a Baader Single Polarising Filter (bought seperately) allows comfortable viewing. Highly recommended. (04/07/2017) Steve Viney - Stockport
